Appena arrivati in stazione a Mandalay, varie persone sono salite sul treno chiedendoci “Volete un taxi?Volete che vi aiutiamo con le valigie?” e noi abbiamo risposto “No, vorremmo solo affittare una moto per qualche giorno”…E loro ce l’hanno subito trovata. In fondo, la notte passata in treno ci aveva lasciati abbastanza sudaticci e inguardabili, ma non così stanchi da doverci cercare subito un posto dove dormire (o lavarci). Così siamo subito ripartiti per esplorare questa nuova regione. L’obiettivo iniziale era attraversare delle montagne passando per strade “non convenzionali” imboccate “a intuito”, e alcune persone a gesti ci avevano fatto intendere che fosse possibile, ma tutte queste strade a un certo punto della montagna finivano nel nulla!
We had just arrived in the station in Mandalay, when people jumped on the train asking us “Do you need a taxi?Do you need me to help you with your luggage?” and we replied “No, we just want to rent a motorbike for a few days”…They found one for us really quickly. Afterall, the night we spent in the train had made us quite sweaty and ugly, but we were not tired enough to need a place where to sleep (or take a shower). So we left immediately to explore this new region. In the beginning, our idea was to cross the mountains by taking “non conventional” paths, chosen “intuitively”. Some people even told us (with gestures) that this would be possible, but in the end all the streets ended in the middle of nowhere at some point in the mountain!
Per cui siamo tornati in pianura.
So we went back to the plain.
Più o meno mangiamo sempre lo stesso cibo, anche perché, soprattutto nei ristoranti sulla strada nelle campagne, nessuno parla inglese e ordiniamo facendo aprire le pentole e indicando il contenuto…Che appunto è sempre lo stesso: noodles o riso, qualche salsa piccante con verdure, a volte pollo o maiale. Oggi però abbiamo scoperto queste deliziose focaccine dolci ripiene di cocco 🙂
We eat always the same food, more or less. This happens also because, especially in street restaurants in the countryside, no one speaks english so we order food by asking to open the pots and indicating what we see inside…Which is always the same: noodles or rice, some spicy sauce with vegetables, or sometimes chicken or pork. But today we discovered these delicious sweet bread filled with coconut 🙂
In questa zona notiamo templi strani, uno a forma di elefante, altri che sembrano una torta rosa. Siamo anche entrati in questa università finendo direttamente dentro l’ufficio del rettore, che ci ha spiegato che qui vengono studenti da tutta la Birmania perché è un’università molto rinomata. In effetti è nuova e moderna e gli studenti sono moltissimi. Qui l’anno accademico è iniziato proprio ora (le vacanze corrispondono ai mesi più secchi e caldi, che sono appena passati).
In this area we see weird temples, one of them has an elephant shape, some others look like pink cakes. We even entered into this university and ended up in the dean’s office, who told us that students from the whole country study here, as it is a renowned university. It looks quite modern and there are a lot of students everywhere. Here the academic year has started in these days (holidays correspond to the hottest and driest months, which have just passed).
Salendo per l’altopiano e godendoci una temperatura sempre più fresca e secca, siamo arrivati a Pyin Oo Lwin, una “hill station” dove i birmani vanno giustamente in vacanza per rinfrescarsi. E’ il primo posto dove non grondo di sudore!!!
Going up on the plateau and enjoying a fresh and dry temperature, we arrived in Pyin Oo Lwin, a hill station where local people go to have refreshing holidays. And I understand them, because this is the first place where I don’t sweat!!!

E si vedono in giro queste bellissime carrozze trainate da cavalli!

Abbiamo incontrato per strada questo signore che è stato la nostra guida della giornata e ci ha portati a cena in un posto stupendo sul lago 🙂 Giornata stancante ma bella, buonanotte!
In the street we met this guy, who was our guide for today, and we had dinner at a nice place on the lake 🙂 It has been a tiring but beautiful day, goodnight!
